There's never a justifiable reason to abandon a pup that has given its owner nothing but unconditional love. People who easily leave dogs behind often fail to appreciate that these sweet animals have feelings too. Thankfully, there are always kind-hearted individuals ready to step in and take these abandoned dogs to a shelter. However, that rarely mends the emotional scars left by their owner's betrayal.

Being placed in a shelter is a far better alternative than being left outside without food, water, or a warm place to sleep, but it’s still not the same as having a loving home and family.

A dog captured in a photo by the High Plains Humane Society (HPHS) at a New Mexico shelter longs for cuddles, attention, and a devoted owner who won’t let him down.

The High Plains Humane Society (HPHS) is dedicated to rescuing animals in Curry County and nearby areas from abuse and neglect. While the organization shares uplifting stories, it also highlights the serious issues related to dog ownership and the abandonment of pets.

HPHS staff frequently photograph dogs at their shelter and partner locations, which is how they came across a small dog who was utterly heartbroken, even showing tears in his eyes.

The pup appeared so despondent behind the kennel doors that the staff felt compelled to capture his image behind the metal bars, illustrating the harsh reality a dog faces after being abandoned.

The resulting photo was heartbreaking, but the story behind it was even more tragic.

The little dog seemed to understand that no one would be coming to rescue him from the shelter, as if he knew he might spend the rest of his life there.

During the photoshoot, he looked as if he was pleading for someone to take him home.

When the HPHS shared the photos on their official Facebook page, the staff had a strong sense that this crying dog’s fortunes were about to change. Their instincts were right.

Applications poured in from all over the world, as people were eager to adopt the pup, who had even earned the nickname “Crying Dog.”

The shelter volunteers ultimately selected a woman who proved to be the perfect match for the dog, offering him a forever home filled with love and positive energy. This environment helped the pup thrive and reveal his true, joyful self.

The story of the “Crying Dog” became so popular that people still contact the shelter today, even though the pup was adopted long ago.

To clarify the situation, HPHS eventually deleted the original post with the dog’s photo and replaced it with an update, explaining:

“We appreciate the kind, concerned callers wanting to adopt her; however, the dog was adopted that same day, 4 years ago.”

Still, there are many other wonderful dogs in need of a loving home, and hopefully, those who were interested in adopting the Crying Dog have found another deserving pup to welcome into their lives.
