Every dog is a good boy or girl, regardless of breed, age, or appearance. And every dog deserves to hear those magical words every single day.

But what if I told you that some dogs never hear them? It’s heartbreaking, isn’t it?

It was even more heartbreaking to see how Bear reacted when he was told for the first time that he was a good boy.

Bear had always been a good boy, but he lived with the wrong people who never showed him the appreciation he deserved. His life had been full of sadness, but being surrendered to the shelter didn’t mean things were getting worse.

In fact, Bear’s future started to look a little brighter when he arrived at Animal Friends of the Valleys in Wildomar, California, where he finally heard those sweet words: "You’re a good boy, Bear."

It’s The First Time Someone Told Him He’s Good

When someone is constantly told they're worthless, they start to believe it. Bear was never told anything kind—he was always pushed aside, yelled at, and made to feel like he didn’t matter. Over time, Bear began to feel exactly that way.

When rescuers first found him near a Chick-fil-A in Wildomar, he was searching through the garbage bins for food. Severely malnourished and neglected, Bear was desperate for love.

With a broken spirit, Bear seemed to have lost his smile. At the shelter, things weren’t much better, and his depression deepened. Being surrounded by other dogs with similar stories of neglect only added to his worries, making him question if the misery would ever end.

But for this beautiful Vizsla, there was hope. Sometimes, when you're at your lowest, the only way is up, toward better days. That shift came when Rocky Kanaka entered Bear’s life, offering him a promise of brighter times ahead.

Bear became part of Rocky’s project, “Sitting With Dogs,” a wonderful initiative that helps nervous, traumatized dogs slowly resocialize and heal, one step at a time.

Rocky took things slowly, as he always does. By looking at Bear, he could tell the pup had been through a lot. Bear had even developed a "kennel nose," marked from constantly pressing against the bars during his frequent stays in shelters.

One by one, Bear began taking treats from Rocky’s hand. The first step in breaking down his guard had been made, and Bear started to relax. He got up from his corner, sniffed around, and even gave Rocky a lick.

Bear was full of love and eager to share it with someone who would listen. And Rocky listened.

For the first time in his life, Bear’s behavior completely changed when Rocky called him a good boy.

Halfway through the video Rocky posted, Bear was called a good boy, and he responded with a joyful wag of his tail, perky ears, and a new spark in his eyes. He felt those words deeply, as if he had known all along that he was a good boy—he just needed someone to remind him.

Despite the trauma he endured, Bear didn’t let it define him. Though he had been malnourished and neglected, his body healed—and so did his spirit.

Rocky was confident that with a little TLC, Bear would soon be the perfect candidate for adoption.

Not only did Bear find a loving human dad, but he also gained a baby sister, a new name, and a fresh start.

Bear’s new dad first saw him at the shelter and later watched Rocky’s video. He knew right then that he had to adopt the Vizsla. As a previous Vizsla owner, Mats knew just how to care for this incredible breed. In the right hands, Bear—now named Shadow—began to flourish.

Even after just two weeks with Mats and his Husky sister, Sigyn, Bear’s transformation was remarkable. He was a brand-new dog, with a clean slate and a chance to start his life over.

With a little help from his new family, Shadow became an internet sensation. His video with Rocky garnered millions of views, with everyone seeing his heartwarming reaction to the words, "You’re a good boy, Bear."

Now known as Shadow Moon, he leads a life full of love and fun. His owner tells him he’s a good boy every day. Shadow has come a long way, from being all skin and bones to being showered with love and affection.

Mats even showed Shadow the video of his reaction to being called a good boy—it was priceless. Everything about this sweet dog's journey is priceless, and you can see it for yourself by visiting...
