If a dog doesn’t grow up in a safe and happy environment, it’s highly likely to develop antisocial behavior, along with feelings of depression and anxiety.

When a dog finally finds itself in a calm, secure space, it often curls up, retreating from the world because they’re not accustomed to feeling at ease.

That’s why it’s so important for the caregiver to be patient, allowing the dog to relax and adjust at its own pace.

Rocky Kanaka, a pet rescue advocate, knew exactly how to approach a pup with trust issues due to a rough past.

Meet Arthur

Arthur is a sweet, one-and-a-half-year-old Cattle Dog mix who was born a stray, part of an unclaimed litter.

He was initially excited to be adopted soon after arriving at the shelter. Unfortunately, his joy was short-lived, as his new family surrendered him back to the shelter, unable to care for him any longer.

This unfortunate event deeply affected Arthur.

He became extremely withdrawn, anxious, and avoided making eye contact with anyone. However, things were about to change when a kind-hearted person named Rocky decided to spend some time with him.

Taking It Slow

Since Arthur was kept in the sallyport, a section of the shelter where dogs are held before entering for evaluation, it was the perfect opportunity for Rocky to introduce himself.

Rocky initially sat at a distance, giving Arthur the space he needed, fully aware that Arthur was frightened by the unfamiliar surroundings he now found himself in.

As Arthur continued to avoid eye contact, Rocky tried to gain his trust by offering him a treat.

At first, Rocky placed the treat in front of Arthur, but the pup only sniffed at it without taking it. He then tried placing another treat closer, but again, Arthur didn’t take it.

Finally, Rocky decided to hold the treat in his hand and offer it directly to Arthur. To his surprise, the pup accepted it and ate the treat!

Rocky was thrilled.

He explained that anxious dogs typically don’t take treats from an open hand, as it can heighten their anxiety. The fact that Arthur did made Rocky feel hopeful.

However, even after accepting a few treats, Arthur still avoided eye contact.

The Power of Kindness

Knowing that Arthur had been surrendered by the family he loved and trusted, Rocky’s heart sank.

Determined to lift his spirits, Rocky showered Arthur with kind words and reminded him of just how special he truly was.

“I know you’re a good boy, and you deserve love. I’m so sorry your family left you; you didn’t deserve that. You deserve hugs, treats, and so much more. Right now marks the beginning of your new life. It might feel a little scary now, but if you trust me, we’ll help you find a family that loves you as much as you love them, okay?” Rocky spoke to Arthur in a YouTube video.

After hearing these heartfelt words, Arthur began to emerge from his shell, even allowing Rocky to give him a gentle pet.

With each kind word from Rocky, Arthur's heart gradually softened.

I believe that with time, Arthur will fully open up and find a family that will finally give him the life he always deserved.

Rocky, your patience and understanding exemplify how important it is to take things slow with animals who need time to process their experiences.
